Local Action for a Sustainable Future

The climate emergency and the loss of biodiversity stand as humankind’s most critical challenges. These problems literally hit close to home, affecting local communities directly. However, it is within our communities that we possess the best tools to address them. Municipalities serve as a driving force behind innovation, capable of identifying people’s needs, experimenting with solutions, and responding swiftly to unexpected developments. It is at the local level that participatory innovation flourishes, showcasing to citizens how sustainable, tangible change can profoundly improve all of our lives. Also, the inherent link between democracy and green action is most visible here. It is high time to implement specific measures to restore biodiversity, safeguard ecosystem services, and fortify cities and villages against heat islands, floods, and droughts.

The ACT NOW Mayors’ Conference 2025 will explore policies, processes and practices that make the green transition democratic, just and fruitful. Which formats lead to a tangible result and create real impact? How can we reach silent groups who are not likely to participate in such processes? How can we create broad alliances among administrations, politics, civil society and businesses? This transformation has to address both ecological and social objectives.

A great range of innovative formats will serve as a powerful inspiration for local leaders from across Europe and beyond, empowering them to make a difference back home. A diverse cohort of up to 300 participants, including Mayors, local municipal representatives, best-practice experts, researchers, young change-makers and other local innovators, will come together for an enriching and impactful exchange. They will gather valuable insights from the groundbreaking ideas generated in and around Vienna while also sharing their own knowledge and expertise in return.

The conference is organised in cooperation with the City of Vienna.

The ACT NOW Mayors’ Conference 2025 will take place in the City Hall on 05-06 May 2025 in Vienna.

Jürgen Czernohorszky, Executive City Councillor for Climate, Environment, Democracy and Personnel, City of Vienna
A sustainable future requires the participation of citizens. And cities in particular play a crucial role in social-ecological transformation and advancing democracy. Cities are home to innovative approaches and many examples of best practice. I am therefore looking forward to sharing Vienna’s projects and learning from the experiences of other cities. I invite city representatives from all over the world to Vienna, the European Capital of Democracy, to exchange ideas and advance local action for a better life for all.
