Stories of Collaboration & Impact

Managing a Fund for Digitisation Projects

When Austria’s Chamber of Labour (AK), representing over 4 million workers, saw how digital tools were reshaping the workplace, they asked a critical question: How can we ensure digitisation works in favor of employees, not just employers?

Together with AK experts, we co-designed a digitisation fund in Vienna and Upper Austria. The fund supports projects developed jointly by company leaders and works councils, ensuring that the solutions are tailored to real needs on the ground.

An expert jury has now selected 250 projects, distributing €18 million in funding. As a result, more than 300,000 workers in Upper Austria have seen tangible improvements in their working conditions—proof that technology, when done right, can empower people.

Evaluating a National GovTech Lab

When asked by a national government to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of their GovTech Lab, aimed at fostering innovation in public administration, we were only too happy to help shape its future.

We started by listening, conducting interviews with key players across the Lab’s ecosystem to understand how it operated and what kind of difference it was making. In parallel, we looked outward, researching leading examples of government technology (GovTech) labs around the world.

What emerged was a clear picture: strengths to build upon, gaps to address, and real opportunities for growth. We compiled our insights into a final report, complete with strategic recommendations, giving the Lab a roadmap to deepen its effectiveness and continue innovating for the public good.

Improving Support for Older Jobseekers

Austria’s Federal Ministry of Labour was reimagining a program for people over 50 facing long-term unemployment. They wanted to know: What works—and how can we do it better?

To find out, we explored programs across Europe with a proven track record of helping older individuals return to work. By identifying what these high-performing initiatives had in common, we uncovered the success factors that really made a difference.

But we didn’t stop at research. We brought the Ministry into direct dialogue with the people behind these programs, creating space for real-time learning and exchange. The result: a stronger, smarter design for Austria’s approach, rooted in what works.
