The RE-USE charity shop in Hradec Králové reduces waste by selling refurbished items and uses the proceeds to fund urban greenery projects.
THE RE-USE CHARITY SHOP
The RE-USE charity shop is part of a long-term, systematic effort by the Statutory City of Hradec Králové to reduce waste and promote sustainability. In support of these goals, the RE-USE system in Hradec Králové was expanded in October 2023 with the opening of a new RE-USE centre, also known as a charity shop.
PROMOTING WASTE PREVENTION AND AFFORDABILITY
This new centre offers functional, properly refurbished electrical appliances sourced from local collection yards, making them available to citizens at affordable prices. The RE-USE project is fundamentally based on the principle of waste prevention, encouraging the re-use of items instead of their disposal. A wide range of items delivered by citizens to collection yards are included in the project, such as household equipment, dishes, tools, decorations, children’s items, sports gear, furniture, bicycles, books, and more.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT
Proceeds from the sale of items at the collection yards are donated to Městské lesy Hradec Králové a.s. to support the planting of greenery in city forests. Funds raised through the RE-USE centre at Kotěrova Street are donated to Technical Services a.s. for the planting of greenery in city parks. This project has both environmental and social dimensions. It has successfully saved thousands of items from ending up on recycling lines or in landfills, promoting waste prevention and sustainability. Additionally, the funds raised contribute to improving the city's climate and public spaces by supporting the planting of greenery.
