Buzzwatch – Safeguarding Our Bees

The Buzzwatch project determines the quantity of local food available for pollinators, enabling governments, nature managers, and beekeepers to adjust their policies and interventions.

MAPPING NECTAR AND POLLEN SOURCES

Pollinators are in trouble for a number of reasons. One important cause is the lack of sufficient nectar and pollen across the whole year. Malnourished bees are much more susceptible to disease and winter mortality. The project utilises artificial intelligence fed by data provided by local people.

ADJUSTING POLICIES TO FAVOUR POLLINATORS

The app consists of a map where you can zoom into an area to view the food supply for bees. The data to be processed consists of aerial photographs taken by the local population. Buzzwatch provides a tool to authorities and green services to adjust their green policy in favour of pollinators. Beekeepers can place their bee colonies in the environment, taking into account the flower supply, without harming the solitary pollinators.

ANALYSING THE IMPACT OF INTERVENTIONS

Buzzwatch makes it possible, for the very first time, to analyse interventions in the environment in terms their effect on pollinators. Managers of green areas and their users can tailor their activities to the carrying capacity of the area. The app can be completed and used throughout Europe.
