Cascais’ Circular Economy Model: Smart Used Cooking Oil Collection System (Sistema de Recolha de Óleos Alimentares Usados)

Cascais’ Circular Economy Model leverages smart technology and community engagement to transform used cooking oil disposal, advancing circular economy principles and environmental sustainability.

ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Improper disposal of used cooking oil (UCO) contaminates water sources, clogs sewage systems, and emits potent greenhouse gases in landfills. Cascais launched a targeted initiative to mitigate these impacts by distributing oil solidifying powder to households, making disposal safer and more efficient.

SMART COLLECTION SOLUTIONS

To optimise UCO recycling, Cascais installed 100 smart collection points equipped with solar panels and fill-level sensors. These collection points streamline the collection process, preventing spills and reducing logistical costs while encouraging responsible disposal practices among residents.

PROMOTING CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Since the project’s launch, UCO collection in the area has risen by 12%, with Cascais targeting a 50m³ collection by 2025. The recovered oil is repurposed into biofuels, detergents, and plastics, exemplifying the city’s commitment to circular economy principles and a more sustainable future.
