Circular Economy of Waste for Land & Environment

The HERAmbiente project houses a composting and bio-stabilisation facility which actively recovers non-hazardous waste from the organic fraction of urban waste.

The HERAmbiente project in Sant'Agata Bolognese's Crocetta district was initiated in 2017/2018. The project houses Italy's most significant composting and bio-stabilisation facility, which actively recovers non-hazardous waste from the organic fraction of urban waste through differentiated collection. This waste is transformed into valuable resources, including compost and biogas, with a unique refinement into bio-methane directly connected to the SNAM Rete Gas network.

This groundbreaking approach avoids over 6,000 tonnes of fossil fuel consumption annually, preventing around 14,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Additionally, the project unearthed a medieval fortified village in the same area. Collaborating with HERAmbiente, the Municipality participated in urban and architectural aspects, contributing to environmental and territorial initiatives. Overall, the project sets a precedent for integrated, environmentally-conscious practices with far-reaching positive consequences.

This collaboration resulted in the swift establishment of a public parking lot and the BEN-ESSERE Park, in October 2020. The parking lot accommodates 30 regular and handicap spaces, surrounded by trees to provide shade and minimise visual impact. The adjacent public park covers 3,000 sqm, catering to various users with a dog area, children's zone, family space, and lighting for nighttime safety. The overall impact extends to environmental conservation, cultural discovery, and enhanced community wellbeing.
