LIFE TreeCheck: Green Infrastructure to Minimise the Urban Heat Island Effect

Tree Check is a mobile app that educates users about the cooling effects of urban trees during heatwaves, promoting climate resilience and encouraging tree preservation.

ADDRESSING URBAN HEAT

The project addresses the impact of climate change on urban life, focusing on mitigating the effects of heatwaves that pose significant health risks, especially in cities that lack adequate preparation. Vulnerable populations are at greater risk of heat-related complications, emphasising the need to preserve trees and water in urban spaces. These natural elements play a vital role in cooling cities and promoting healthier living environments.

TREE CHECK MOBILE APP: EDUCATING THE PUBLIC

Since its launch in 2018, the project has introduced "Tree Check", an educational mobile app designed to highlight the vital role of trees in cooling urban areas during heatwaves—a growing concern for Central European cities increasingly affected by climate change. The app allows users to identify tree species, learn about their cooling effects, and encourages active care for urban greenery. To date, the app has been downloaded by nearly 80,000 users, fostering public engagement with urban climate resilience and promoting a positive relationship between people and trees.

PROMOTING BEST PRACTICES

The project has developed ongoing consultancy systems to assist municipalities in creating adaptation strategies and provided training to support implementation. Additionally, the Adapterra Awards competition highlights exemplary adaptation measures, promoting knowledge sharing through a growing database of nearly 250 cases. Expert teams from four organisations across four Central European countries continue to support cities and regions in climate change adaptation, resulting in over 50 adaptation strategies developed to date.
