Mapping Roads with AI-Cameras in Garbage Trucks

Helsingborg uses AI technology to address road maintenance by attaching cameras to garbage trucks.

MAPPING THE CITY'S ROAD NETWORK

In Helsingborg, Sweden, there are roughly 600 km of streets and roads that from time to time need maintenance. Without the help of AI technology, mapping the city's road network used to take almost a year. Now, with the help of an AI tool in mobile phones that are placed in the windshield of garbage trucks, Helsingborg can analyse the quality of the roads and the need for maintenance automatically.

GARBAGE TRUCKS FITTED WITH AI CAMERAS

Thanks to AI technology, mapping the entire network of the city's streets and roads can now be done in two weeks. Attaching AI-cameras to garbage trucks makes use of the one million kilometres of road the trucks roll over every year in Helsingborg. The garbage trucks record where there are potholes, cracks, and other issues that need to be fixed. By equipping the garbage trucks with mobile phones, they can continuously collect information about the roads.

EFFICIENTLY IMPROVING ROAD QUALITY

Through this initiative, Helsingborg saves both time and resources as costly inventories are avoided and information that can be use for future planning is automatically received. Seen from an economic perspective, the city has been able to reduce the costs of mapping by almost 80%, while improving road quality.
