Bilbao is transforming schoolyards into inclusive community hubs that promote informal learning, intergenerational connection, and youth employment.
ACTIVATING THE “THIRD TEACHER”
Children and teenagers learn not only from teachers and peers but also from the spaces they inhabit. In Bilbao, public schoolyards—spanning over 140,000 m² across 49 schools—are being reimagined as educational and social assets. The “Open Schoolyards” initiative turns these everyday spaces into vibrant learning environments outside of school hours, contributing to more inclusive, safe, and supportive neighbourhoods.
A COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE ROOTED IN PLACE
Each month, around 2,000 children and 320 parents participate in recreational and educational activities within these open schoolyards. These familiar local spaces support social bonding, promote healthy play, and foster a sense of belonging. Activities are guided by trained young professionals, ensuring the spaces are inclusive and engaging for all participants.
EMPOWERING YOUTH AND BUILDING LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS
The initiative also promotes youth employability by offering 12-month contracts within the Public Administration to university graduates in education and social work. The project is jointly supported by Bilbao City Council, the Basque Employment Service, educational institutions, and parents’ associations. Through this collaborative approach, “Open Schoolyards” strengthens community ties while advancing educational and social innovation.
