The Schlaraffenband Ruhr is transforming the Ruhr’s cycle paths into vibrant edible landscapes that nourish both body and community.
CONNECTING THE RUHR WITH EDIBLE OASES
The Ruhr’s main cycling routes—the Emscher Cycle Path, Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, and the upcoming RS1—are no longer just transit corridors but evolving into a shared, innovative project: the Schlaraffenband Ruhr. Inspired by the concept of an “edible city,” this initiative turns green cycle paths into ribbons of nourishment, with snack stops every 5 kilometers featuring fruit trees, berry bushes, nut trees, herbs, grapevines, and rose hips. Raised beds planted with vitamin-rich wild plants like hawthorn, sea buckthorn, borage, and barberry add diversity and seasonal variety.
A SHARED VISION FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN LIVING
Brought to life by the Essen, Bochum, and Dortmund Nutrition Councils, the Schlaraffenband Ruhr builds on the region’s growing wave of urban greening and food councils. These movements aim to reshape urban space by integrating sustainable, local food systems directly into public environments. The cycle path stops become themed hubs reflecting their surroundings—from arid zones to wetlands—offering cyclists fresh snacks and a chance to refill with purified drinking water, while wooden benches provide welcoming rest spots.
A VIBRANT NETWORK OF EDIBLE STOP-OVERS
This project redefines green areas as vibrant commons where anyone can pick, plant, and engage with nature. Beyond providing nourishment, the Schlaraffenband Ruhr fosters biodiversity, community connections, and urban resilience. It offers a fresh, green, and lively future for the Ruhr region, where sustainable food culture and active mobility flow hand in hand, enriching daily life for residents and visitors alike.
