School Gardens for Learning, Healing, and Community Resilience

Rybnik’s school gardening programme uses hands-on environmental education to support Ukrainian refugee children, promote sustainability, and foster community cohesion.

GARDENS AS SAFE SPACES FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN

Since the war in Ukraine began, Poland has welcomed millions of refugees, with Rybnik seeing a significant rise in its Ukrainian population—particularly among school-aged children. In response, the city launched a school gardening initiative to help integrate these children into their new environment. The programme creates inclusive green spaces in schools and kindergartens, offering a sense of safety, stability, and belonging for over 695 Ukrainian students enrolled in local schools as of 2024.

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH EDUCATION

Developed in partnership with Seed Programs International and the Resiliency Gardens Foundation, the programme has established gardens in 19 schools, engaging over 4,400 students. These spaces are used for environmental education and hands-on learning about growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Beyond sustainability, the gardens raise awareness of plant-based nutrition, provide therapeutic benefits, and help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression among vulnerable children.

INTERGENERATIONAL COMMUNITY BUILDING

Looking ahead, Rybnik will expand the programme by involving seniors from the City’s Senior Council, adding an intergenerational layer to learning. This collaboration bridges generations, promotes knowledge transfer, and preserves local agricultural traditions. By connecting students, teachers, NGOs, Ukrainian families, and older citizens, the gardening initiative strengthens social cohesion and aligns with broader European goals related to health, biodiversity, and climate action.
