Swimming Towards Inclusion – Swimming Lessons for Children from Low-Income Families and Children with Disabilities

This inclusive swimming programme in Kosovo offers children from low-income families and those with disabilities equal access to recreation, empowerment, and community integration.

TACKLING INEQUALITY THROUGH RECREATION

Children living in poverty or with disabilities are often excluded from physical and social development opportunities due to financial hardship and lack of inclusive infrastructure. This project addresses the long-standing gap by providing structured swimming lessons—giving these children a chance to play, grow, and connect in safe and supportive environments.

A PIONEERING MUNICIPAL INITIATIVE

As Kosovo’s first municipally funded recreational programme for vulnerable children, this initiative marks a transformative shift in local public services. It redefines swimming as more than sport—positioning it as a tool for inclusion, self-confidence, and equal participation. The project takes a holistic approach, focusing not only on physical well-being but also on emotional development and social engagement.

CHALLENGING STIGMA, BUILDING COHESION

By bringing together children from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities, the programme dismantles stigma and promotes shared experiences. It fosters empathy, encourages friendships, and helps build a more unified, compassionate community—both in and beyond the swimming pool.
