The Loop – East London’s Circular Economy Hub

The Loop is a circular economy hub in Hackney Wick, East London, that repurposes an underutilised warehouse into space for circular and creative businesses, fostering local economic growth while promoting waste reduction and sustainable practices.

TRANSFORMING UNDERUTILISED SPACE FOR CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The Loop is a circular economy hub located in Hackney Wick, east London, developed by the Hackney Wick & Fish Island Community Development Trust (HWFI CDT) in collaboration with London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), ReLondon, and UCL. This innovative project repurposes an underutilised warehouse into light-industrial space for circular and creative businesses, with a focus on waste reduction, carbon footprint minimisation, and local economic growth.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT THROUGH CIRCULAR PRINCIPLES

The project was built by bringing together local residents and businesses around a shared challenge: waste. From plastic and beer bottles to greasy food waste and textiles, circular economy principles became the unifying solution. Through extensive community engagement, the vision for The Loop was shaped, addressing a clear gap in the area and generating momentum for action.

CONNECTING HERITAGE WITH SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION

Rooted in Hackney Wick’s history of industrial innovation—including the early invention of plastics and waterproof fabrics—The Loop connects this heritage with today’s pressing sustainability challenges. The hub hosts a diverse range of circular businesses, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. It provides the space, events, and support needed for businesses to test and implement circular solutions. By supporting local businesses in reducing waste and developing sustainable solutions, The Loop contributes to a resilient, green economy and a community-driven approach to urban regeneration.
