The Market promotes healthy eating and supports local farmers to reduce obesity and chronic diseases in Valongo.
PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
The Market is a pioneering initiative developed under the Municipal Health Plan of Valongo, designed to combat obesity and other chronic diseases by promoting healthier behaviours and lifestyles. This project encourages healthy eating habits, supports the local economy, and aligns with environmental sustainability goals.
ACCESS TO FRESH LOCAL PRODUCTS
It provides fresh, seasonal, and affordable products from local farmers, with a focus on reaching the most vulnerable populations. Since November 2020, in partnership with the Cooperative of Agricultural Producers of Valongo, the Municipality has operated an online ordering platform for locally produced fruit and vegetable baskets. These baskets are conveniently delivered at transport hubs after working hours, making it easy for residents to pick them up on their way home.
IMPACT AND INCLUSION
Over the past four years, more than 40,000 baskets — equivalent to 280 tons of fresh food — have been sold, benefiting 4,100 families. Notably, in the last two years, the City Council has co-financed the cost of the baskets, investing €90,000 across nearly 27,000 orders. Project monitoring has revealed a gradual increase in participation from lower-educated groups, indicating that the initiative is successfully reaching more vulnerable communities facing social and health challenges.
