Being forced to spend days or weeks at home compounds existing life problems. The coronavirus crisis has shown that gender inequality is still a global problem. Many women work remotely at home as well as carrying all the responsibilities regarding childcare household chores. This is why the Mayor of Beşiktaş, Rıza Akpolat, started a meaningful awareness project by emphasizing gender equality to draw attention to this issue.
Mayor Akpolat explained the unwritten rules of quarantine days in three sentences:
- There is no women’s business, no men’s business, there is only housework.
- Everyone knows how to clean a house.
- Taking care of children is a shared task for parents.
