After tackling the most pressing issues during the coronavirus pandemic, cities are preparing for new challenges. After many weeks at home, children returned to their schools and kindergartens. Whilst many parents need to think about how to organise and manage child care during the summer months, cities need to think about how they can re-design their summer offers in times of social distancing.
The German city of Essen set up a special “Situation Centre Summer Holidays”. The aim is to ensure holiday care and the implementation of offers for Essen children and young people under corona conditions for the 2020 summer holidays. These projects usually offer childcare but also leisure activities and education. Among the organisations involved are the youth and welfare associations, the youth welfare service Essen, the Ehrenamt Agentur Essen, the Essen Sports Federation and club representatives, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and above all the departments of the city administration dealing with the topics of youth, education and sport. In addition, central administrative departments from the public order office to the public health department are involved.
