The cultural scene is among the hardest hit in the face of the coronavirus crisis. Theatres, concert halls, and cinemas are among the venues which will stay closed for an indefinite amount of time. Many artists are in deep water, so to speak.
“Culture above water” is a creative event concept which allows artists to perform whilst complying with corona-safe distance regulations: on a raft on a lake. The audience is invited to listen in boats, on surfboards and on air mattresses. The initiators of the so-called Boot-Theater (“boat theatre”), the association KulturDIREKT am Wörthersee, were inspired by the revived drive-in cinemas.
The first “Culture above Water” event takes place at Lake Wörthersee in Austria, on June 19 and 20, 2020, starting at 7 pm with a programme ranging from musical theatre to jazz. It is a showcase project and hopes to be copied throughout Austria and the EU. The project is financed by private sponsors from civil society. All ticket proceeds go to the artists.
