REVIVING RURAL AREAS
This non-profit organisation managed to retain and increase the population in a small village in rural Spain, thanks to sponsorship and century-old olive trees. This pioneering project reinvigorates rural areas in Spain through a sponsorship system. This system was initiated almost ten years ago, and has create a sustainable, high-quality model.
A FARMERS' COOPERATIVE
This organisation maintains centuries-old olive trees to produce extra virgin olive oil in a cooperative model with local farmers. This creates quality employment, which is sustainable over time, with a focus on employing women and those at risk of exclusion. The overall objective is to bring 100,000 olive trees back into production and create 100 jobs.
CREATING JOBS AND REDUCING EMISSIONS
Currently, 16,000 trees have been brought back into production and more than 35 rural jobs have been created, thanks to almost 7,000 sponsors. In terms of environmental impact, 7.2 tonnes of carbon emissions have been mitigated. Oliete has been visited by 19,000 people and won more than 32 awards, as well as becoming recognised as a Public Utility Association.
