The Green Urban Bus Shelters project in Ostrów Wielkopolski replaces traditional bus stops with eco-friendly shelters featuring year-round vegetation that cools waiting areas, improves air quality, and supports the city’s broader goals for sustainable urban transport and climate resilience.
GREEN BUS SHELTERS FOR URBAN CLIMATE IMPROVEMENT
As part of the green-blue revolution, Ostrów Wielkopolski has installed innovative "green" bus shelters along Wojska Polskiego, Gimnazjalna, Limanowskiego, and Śmigielskiego streets. These eco-friendly shelters, replacing old structures, have been designed to improve the urban microclimate and enhance the aesthetics of public spaces. Each shelter is covered with year-round vegetation, including ivy, which not only adds visual appeal but also produces up to 10 kg of oxygen per year.
ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN
Additionally, during hot weather, the green roofs reduce the temperature inside the shelter by up to 10°C, providing passengers with more comfortable waiting conditions. The shelters are equipped with a rainwater drainage system, supporting sustainable water management, as well as wooden benches and yellow tactile paving for visually impaired individuals, increasing functionality and accessibility.
SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT FOR A GREENER CITY
The implementation of this project, worth over 244,000 PLN, was made possible through funding from the EEA Financial Mechanism and the state budget. This investment is part of the broader initiative "E-Ostrów 2050 – Ecological, Energetic, Economic City", which aims to develop low-emission public transport and modernise the city's transport infrastructure. Through these efforts, Ostrów Wielkopolski is becoming more environmentally friendly and resident-oriented, promoting sustainable development and innovative solutions in urban spaces.
