Rock the Block redefines affordable housing by transforming Athens’ iconic 'Polykatoikia' buildings into sustainable, community-driven living spaces.
RETHINKING HOUSING FROM THE BLOCK UP
"Rock the Block" (RtB) addresses the cycle of poor housing conditions, unmet needs, and weakened community ties through a holistic, neighborhood-based model. Rather than relying on fragmented interventions, the project uses the ‘Polykatoikia’—typical mixed-use residential blocks in Athens—as the focal point for transformation. These familiar structures are reimagined as sites of sustainable, inclusive, and affordable urban living.
UPGRADING HOMES, BUILDING COMMUNITY
RtB operates on three interconnected pillars. First, physical and technical retrofits improve energy efficiency, accessibility, and circularity, using smart technologies and inclusive design. These upgrades are guided by ‘Polykatoikia Action Plans,’ co-designed with residents through an open call. Second, a new Co-Living Hub will offer skills-building workshops, care services, and community events—fostering a culture of shared responsibility and mutual support that underpins affordable housing.
EMBEDDING CHANGE IN PUBLIC POLICY
To ensure long-term impact, RtB introduces a municipal Housing Office to offer residents legal advice, housing protection, and support—streamlining access to services under one roof. The project also pilots a new urban policy tool that integrates public consultation, contracting, and funding mechanisms. Its findings will feed into policy briefs and scalable roadmaps for co-living, helping local, regional, and national authorities adopt more integrated neighborhood housing strategies.
