My First Pages ensures equal access to books and promotes literacy from birth through targeted book distribution and family engagement activities.

BOOK ACCESS FROM BIRTH TO CHILDHOOD

My First Pages addresses reading inequalities by providing free books at critical milestones in early childhood development. From birth to 18 months, babies receive books during vaccination appointments at health centers. Between ages 2 and 5, children are gifted a book on their birthday via the Public Library, and from ages 6 to 10, books are delivered directly to children’s homes by post on their birthdays. This inclusive approach ensures that children from all socioeconomic backgrounds can access reading materials regularly, making reading a right rather than a privilege.

PARENTAL AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The project also promotes family literacy through story hours and parent workshops that emphasize the importance of early reading and foster a culture of literacy at home. As such, My First Pages helps empower parents and caregivers to become active partners in their children’s reading journey. Partnerships with health centers, hospitals, and libraries strengthen the community network supporting children’s literacy.

LONG-TERM IMPACT AND GLOBAL ALIGNMENT

Short-term goals focus on increasing access to books and raising awareness about the value of reading. Long-term, the project aims to develop critical thinking, improve reading skills, and foster cultural engagement among families. Aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda, My First Pages supports Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities), contributing to the formation of critical, informed, and participatory citizens in Braga.
