ID could function as a debit card to receive financial benefits

The coronavirus pandemic drastically widens the economic and financial gap between the rich and the poor and governments need to minimise the economic blow caused by job losses and income reductions due to mandatory confinement measures.

Now the Panama government is implementing a solidarity plan for workers affected by the crisis. However, a large number of citizens does not have a bank account; given the impossibility of queuing to receive checks, the government has to find new ways of transferring the benefits. Together with tech experts and banks, it is currently exploring options such as an electronic purse or the option to apply the credit to the customer through their ID.
