    Self-sufficiency in times of lockdown

Lockdown measures around the world have led to a decrease in global and regional trade. As a consequence, the supply of goods to the different regions in Lebanon has become more and more difficult.

The municipality in Bishmizzine in Northern Lebanon is, therefore, encouraging its residents to grow their own wheat and vegetables in order to supply themselves and their neighbours. 5000 plants and trees have been distributed to 120 families who have a garden or own a larger property of land. 50.000 sqm of wheat has been cultivated for the production of around 70 tons of flour. The parts of the harvest which are not used by the families will be given to neighbours, people in need, and the public kitchen in the municipality of Bishmizzine.

Bishmizzine was always a pioneer in crisis management starting with the recycling plant which was established before the waste crisis started in Lebanon, going through the fish and duck lake which was a dump before the Municipality transformed it to an amazing landscape, and now this, self sufficiency which not only keeps the village safe in terms of food security but encourages people to go back to land which improves the overall well being of the society.
Proud to be from Bishmizzine, the village of great minds.
