During the coronavirus crisis many governments focus on informing people in the national language only. This means that the most relevant information does not reach those who may not be familiar with a country’s national language, such as newly arrived inhabitants, immigrants and refugees.
In Uppsala, Sweden’s 4th largest city, the local umbrella organisation for about 40 immigrant associations has set up chat groups on WhatsApp to make sure that immigrant communities can access the latest updates regarding the new coronavirus. How does it work? Each language has its own chat group which people can join to access information about the spread of the corona virus and recommendations from the government and health authorities. The service is updated daily.
