Big Bocs Bwyd

Big Bocs Bwyd empowers future generations to care about the food they eat, understand how it is produced, and learn about how they can live healthy lives.

CHILDREN EXPERIENCE FOOD POVERTY

Research highlights that 24.4% of households with children experienced food insecurity in January 2023. This emphasises how the cost of living crisis has increased the risk of food poverty. Big Bocs Bwyd (BBB) works in partnership with 70 school communities across Wales to ensure that no child is hungry and that every child is able to learn how to make good food choices that enable them to thrive.

REDUCING FOOD WASTE AND INSECURITY

This project responds to the rising cost of living crisis while contributing to a reduction in food poverty. BBB school communities have access to a pay-as-you-feel shop and can take part in authentic learning experiences about growing and cooking to become more food literate. Children learn how to reduce food waste as they improve their nutritional intake and wellbeing, all the while involving their parents in the learning journey. The project ensures easy access to nutritious foods, so families don't have to rely on transport.

COMMUNITIES BECOME MORE FOOD LITERATE

BBB creates value and improves lives as school communities learn how to measurably reduce food waste while increasing their nutritional intake and wellbeing. This supports learners' health wellbeing, enhancing their ability to think and learn effectively, and subsequently their academic successes. The wider community also becomes more food literate which embeds a healthier culture, supporting sustainable change and improvements for future generations.
