A specifically designed App allows disabled parking card holders to more easily find an available parking space, while reducing the illegal occupation of these spaces by able-bodies drivers.
ILLEGALLY OCCUPIED DISABLED PARKING SPACES
In the urban centre of Chania there are about 160 designated parking spaces for disabled people, which were being illegally occupied on a daily basis by able-bodied drivers. It was therefore necessary to find a smart-solution to manage these spaces, in order to prevent their illegal occupation and to facilitate the movement of people with disabilities.
AN ELECTRONIC SYSTEM TO MANAGE PARKING
The Municipality of Chania installed an electronic system for managing parking spaces for disabled people, through which each disabled parking card holder receives a special Bluetooth card. The card is placed in the car and a specifically designed App checks the availability of parking spaces, enabling users to find the best parking space for their needs. At the same time, the legal and illegal occupation of disabled parking spaces is constantly monitored in real time.
ENHANCING DISABLED PEOPLE'S PARTICIPATION IN CITY LIFE
This valuable tool facilitates the movement of people with disabilities and encourages their integration and equal participation in the life of the city. The system's statistics show that within one year of operation, the illegal occupation of these spaces has been reduced by more than 60%, while the daily legal occupation is constantly increasing.
